Splashes of colour flying through the street, it can only mean one thing…HOLI!

Holi is the ancient Hindu festival marking the arrival of Spring, celebrating love, colour and fertility, as well as the triumph of good over evil.

Whilst it brings to mind a vision of excited revellers throwing colourful powder at each other, this is actually only one part of the festival. It is, in fact, split into two different events: Holika Dahan and Rangwali Holi.

Holika Dahan takes place the night before Rangwali Holi, this year on 1st March, where a bonfire and traditional rituals signify good defeating evil.

The next morning festival-goers are immersed in streets bursting with colour, as handfuls of colourful powder are flung through the air and mixed with water.

The end result may be messy but the excited festival goers, vibrant colours and street transformations certainly sum up the word ‘celebration’.
